I'm here to compare two buying strategies: retrofitting with Satco LED light bulbs and modules, versus replacing whole fixtures—especially for LED spotlights and exterior downlights. If local regulations require strict glare control, verify the whole fixture, not just the light engine.
Round 3 conclusion: For interior spotlights, retrofit is a perfectly good starting point. For exterior downlights, I'd rather start with a complete fixture that is listed for wet locations and dark-sky compliance.
Round 4: When it fails—how to fix LED strip lights that won't turn on
Maintenance is the hidden center of any lighting TCO. Integrated fixtures fail as a unit. Replaceable modules fail as a small part. And LED strip lights fail in their own annoying way.
The most frustrating part of troubleshooting an LED strip light is that the LEDs are rarely the problem. You'd think a dead strip would be obvious—burned chips, black marks, something visible. More often, the strip won't turn on because the driver or the dimmer is gone, or a connector has worked loose.
Here's how to fix LED strip lights that won't turn on before you pay for a service call:
- Test the driver/PSU. Most LED strip systems run on 12V or 24V constant voltage. Measure the output with a multimeter. No voltage means the driver is the culprit.
- Bypass the dimmer or controller. Zigbee and 0-10V dimmers can lock up in odd states. Connect the strip directly to the driver and see if it lights up.
- Check strip-to-wire connectors and solder joints. The cheapest connector is the most common failure. Reseat it or re-terminate the wire.

Calculated the worst case: a retrofit saves $2,300 upfront and fails early if I choose the wrong housing. Best case: it runs 50,000 hours with no issues. The expected value says retrofit, but the downside feels worse if I'm wrong. So my procurement policy is simple: photograph the housings, test one unit, and ask for the actual spec sheet before scaling an order. That has saved me more than once.
In my opinion, the S3104 and similar retrofit modules are the right default for standard interior cans. I'm gonna keep using them there.
