Six questions I actually get asked (plus one nobody asks but should)

I'm a procurement manager at a 45-person commercial electrical contractor. Q1: What do the Satco S3184 LED bulb specifications actually mean in the field?

The S3184 is a standard A19 shape—9W LED, 60W incandescent equivalent, 2700K warm white, around 800 lumens, dimmable. Nothing exotic. It's our default spec bulb for residential and light-commercial retrofits.

Where people get tripped up: they compare it to a 40W incandescent on price alone. The S3184 puts out roughly double the lumens of a 40W bulb. If you're replacing 40W bulbs that were only ever there for ambient glow, the S3184 will feel harsh. My rule: match on lumens, not wattage. If you truly want a 40W-equivalent output, look at the S2856 range (5W) or similar.

One more thing—Satco updates SKUs without much fanfare. Always verify the lumen count and color temperature on the box before you commit to a bulk order. I've been burned.

Q2: Satco 40 watt bulbs vs LED replacements—does the ROI still hold up?

I ran this comparison in early 2024 for a 62-fixture office retrofit. Assumptions: 10 hours a day, 300 days, $0.14/kWh (our commercial rate at the time).

Numbers per fixture per year:

  • 40W incandescent: ~$16.80 in electricity
  • 9W LED (S3184-class): ~$3.78

Across 62 fixtures, that's about $807 a year. The LED costs roughly $1.20 more per bulb upfront. Payback is under two months. That's a no-brainer in an office. But then again—if you're looking at a warehouse that only runs lights two hours a day, payback stretches to about seven months. Still positive, just not as clean.

Where I'd hesitate: spaces where ambient temperature regularly exceeds 120°F. LED chips lose lifespan fast when they can't dissipate heat. That's a job for a high-bay rated fixture, not a retrofit bulb.

Q3: Is "downlight ceiling" different from a "luminaire downlight"?

In practice, no. In procurement terms, sometimes yes.

Lay it out: a downlight ceiling fixture is what gets recessed into the ceiling plane and throws light downward. A luminaire downlight is technically the same object, but "luminaire" means the complete assembly including driver, optics, and photometric data. When a spec says "luminaire," it's a certified, tested, ready-to-install unit. When a quote just says "downlight," read the fine print.

Why does this matter to a buyer? Because we've received quotes where the "downlight" line item was the trim only—no driver, no bulb. The unit price looked great until we realized we needed $8–$14 more per fixture in accessory components. That's a 20% swing on a 60-fixture job.

Two things to always confirm: complete assembly included, and UL or ETL listing on the box. Unlisted fixtures will fail inspection, period.

Q4: How hard is it to change a light fixture, really?

Depends entirely on what kind of change you mean. Three tiers:

  1. Replacing a fixture with the same type: 30–45 minutes per fixture for someone comfortable with basic wiring. Kill the breaker, disconnect three wires, reconnect, mount. Homeowner-doable.
  2. Changing fixture type (recessed to track, flush mount to pendant): 1.5–2 hours each. Usually involves ceiling repair or new mounting hardware. Electrician territory.
  3. Adding a new fixture location: 3–5 hours each. Requires running cable, possibly adding a switch leg, drywall work. Full electrical job.

Labor rates in our region (Ohio, 2024) run $85–$120 per hour for commercial work. So tier 1 is $60–$90 per fixture; tier 3 easily clears $400.

Here's the pitfall that cost us: we didn't have a formal approval process for installation scope. A vendor pitched "install included" on a 40-fixture job. Cost us $2,100 when we found out "included" meant "delivery to site." That was the third time we hit hidden installation charges. I finally built a checklist: materials, labor, disposal, and contingency—separate line items, signed off before any PO goes out.

Q5: What's the real total cost before I sign?

Fixture or bulb unit price is maybe 40% of the picture. Here's the formula I use:

  • Unit price × quantity
  • Labor (estimate using the tiers above)
  • Consumables: wire nuts, brackets, conduit fittings
  • Disposal of old fixtures (oddly expensive—often $3–$6 per unit)
  • Expected replacement rate over 12 months

That last line is the one people ignore. On a 60-fixture office job, we typically see 3–5 early failures within the first year—driver failures, mostly. Budget 5–8% of your fixture spend for replacements and you won't get caught off guard.

Q6: When shouldn't you go with Satco?

Honest answer: three situations where I skip them entirely.

  1. Full networked control systems. Satco has smart products, but if the spec calls for building-wide DALI or 0–10V integration with a central BMS, you're looking at a different ecosystem from the start.
  2. Architect-specified high-end projects. Custom finishes, low-glare optics, tight photometric requirements—control down to Delta E tolerances and cut sheets signed by the designer. Satco's catalog doesn't play there.
  3. Extreme environments. Corrosive chemical areas, ambient above 50°C, marine or hazardous location. Different certifications, different supply chain.

Where Satco wins: standard commercial retrofit, multifamily, retail, office refresh. Broad SKU coverage, in-stock availability, accurate specs, and pricing that holds up on bulk orders. Under $5,000 project value, they're almost always on my shortlist. Above that, I run a bid.
