Who is this for?
This is for anyone who writes a spec or signs a purchase order: contractors, electricians, lighting designers, and facility managers. If you need to make sure the fixture you order meets the physical, electrical, and code requirements of the space, this is your playbook.
Step 1: Classify by Application (Where is it going?)
This is the step most people skip, and it’s where the big mistakes happen. The space dictates the housing, trim, and impact rating. Don't look at the bulb first. Look at the ceiling or wall.
Dry, Damp, or Wet?
This is a non-negotiable starting point.
- Dry Location (Indoor, no moisture): Bedrooms, living rooms, climate-controlled hallways. Standard flush mounts and downlights work here.
- Damp Location (Protected from rain, but humidity/condensation): Bathrooms (above the shower zone), covered porches, under eaves. You need fixtures like a satco s3106 rated for damp locations.
- Wet Location (Direct water exposure): Open decks, pool surrounds, exterior walls. You need sealed fixtures with rubber gaskets.
Visual Check: Look for the UL listing mark on the fixture label. It will say "Suitable for Damp Locations" or "Suitable for Wet Locations." If you don't see it, assume dry only. Period.
New Construction vs. Remodel vs. Shallow Plenum?
If it's a downlight, the housing type matters.
- New Construction (IC rated): Goes in before the drywall. Can be in contact with insulation.
- Remodel (IC rated): Fits through an existing cutout in the ceiling. Has spring clips.
- Shallow Housing: If your ceiling joist is only 4 inches deep, a standard can light won't fit. Look for a low-profile led downlight retro fit kit.

Step 2: Classify by Power Source & Light Source (What makes it go?)
Now we figure out the electrical guts. This is where you match the fixture to the voltage and the dimmer.
Line-Voltage vs. Low-Voltage
- Line-Voltage (120V): Most standard residential and commercial fixtures. The fixture screws directly into a junction box. Wiring is straightforward: black to black, white to white.
- Low-Voltage (12V/24V): Common for undercabinet lighting, many track light heads, and some landscape lights. These need a driver (a transformer). If you don't see a driver in the box or spec sheet, you need to buy one separately. I can't tell you how many times I've seen a job site stall because someone ordered low-voltage track heads but no driver.
The Single Pole vs. Double Pole Trap: This is the number one question I get. It’s about the wall switch, not the bulb.
- Single Pole: Controls one light from one switch. Standard.
- Double Pole (3-way or 4-way): Controls one light from two or more switches (e.g., top and bottom of a stairwell).
Why this matters for classification: If you are ordering a satco smart fixture with a Zigbee dimmer module, that module must be rated for a single-pole or multi-pole circuit. I flagged a $28,000 order last month where the customer bought single-pole smart dimmers for a hotel hallway that required 3-way switching. The dimmers wouldn't work. Dimmable vs. Non-Dimmable (and which dimmer?)
Just because a bulb says "LED" doesn't mean it dims well.

- CCT (Kelvin): 2700K (warm) vs. 4000K (cool) vs. 5000K (daylight). Don't mix Kelvin in the same room. I rejected a batch of 8,000 satco downlights in 2023 because the spec said 3000K, but the first sample pulled from a box read 3500K. The vendor claimed it was "within tolerance." Our standard requires a variance of less than 150K. We sent them back.
- CRI (Color Rendering Index): 90 CRI is standard for good color. 80 CRI is okay for warehouses. If the spec says 90+ CRI, don't accept 80 CRI. Your client will notice the difference in paint colors and wood tones.
Smart Control Compatibility
If you're using a satco Zigbee fixture, it needs a compatible hub or bridge. I've seen people buy a $40 Zigbee bulb and try to use it with a $15 non-Zigbee hub. It won't work.
- Check the protocol: Zigbee, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth? The fixture and the controller must speak the same language.

- Voltage? 120V line vs. 12V/24V low. (Is the driver included?)
- Switch Type? Single pole vs. Double pole (3-way/4-way).
- Dimmer Compatibility? Check the specific dimmer model.
- CCT & CRI? Matched for the space.
- Smart Protocol? Zigbee, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or none.
- Certification? UL Listed? Does it match the USPS Business Mail 101 criteria for shipping dimensions? (Just checking if you're paying attention to packaging size.)
That's it. Three steps. One checklist. If you can answer those 9 questions before you write a PO, you will save yourself the $22,000 headache I saw last year.
