A DOB downlight, on the other hand, has its driver integrated directly into the LED board. DOB means driver-on-board. It installs thinner than older separated driver designs, and it can be less expensive up front. But it also means the LED board and driver are one thing. If the driver fails, you're not swapping a little box. You're replacing the whole downlight.

What Lighting Companies Does Johnson Controls Own, and Why It Matters

By now, you might be wondering: what lighting companies does Johnson Controls own, and does that change my decision? I understand why. If a building is managed by Johnson Controls, the knee-jerk reaction is to search for a list of compatible brands.

The honest answer, based on Johnson Controls' public brand information as of January 2025, is that Johnson Controls doesn't own a household LED fixture brand. It owns building technology companies—and the lighting-adjacent one is Distech Controls, which focuses on control systems for lighting, HVAC, and other building automation. That matters for a different reason: if your project connects to a JCI/Distech system, the fixture's control input matters more than the brand on the lens.

So don't search for what lighting companies does Johnson Controls own and then pick a fixture based on the logo. Instead, ask the controls contractor what signals they need: 0-10V, DALI, or a simple switched relay. A self-contained fixture like the Satco S9884 can be an easy switched load on a BMS. A DOB downlight with a specific driver might be less cooperative. The more complex fixture isn't automatically the better fit.

That's the part that surprised me: for basic on/off control, a fixed-output flush mount can be more reliable than a fancy DOB fixture because there's no dimming curve to negotiate. If you need dimming, make sure the fixture's control input is explicitly specified.

What to Order, Based on Who's Asking
