IP65, per IEC 60529, means the fixture is dust-tight and protected against low-pressure water jets. That rating comes from sealed housings, gaskets, and testing. It costs more because it really is built differently. I learned this the hard way: I tried to save $4 per fixture on a wet-location install by using a dry-rated downlight. The inspector caught it. The redo cost $1,200.
The way I see it, an IP65 downlight is like insurance. You pay for it because you might need it. If you don't need it, the label just adds cost. If you do need it, the non-rated option is the expensive one.
Does a dimmable chandelier need a special dimmer?
If you want it to actually dim, yes. A dimmable chandelier means the fixture is compatible with a dimmer—not that it comes with one. I get why people assume it is plug-and-play. It isn't.
For LED chandeliers, the dimmer often matters more than the bulb. A leading-edge dimmer that worked fine with incandescent candle bulbs can make an LED candelabra bulb flicker, buzz, or drop out at low levels. Compatibility is the keyword.
In Q2 2024, we installed a Satco dimmable chandelier in a hotel lobby and connected it to the existing dimmer. It buzzed. The owner thought the fixture was broken. Is it OK to sleep with LED strip lights on?
Technically, if the strip and power supply are certified and not covered by anything flammable, it won't start a fire. But I wouldn't, and not because of the electricity bill.
Take this with a grain of salt, but a 30W strip running 8 hours a night is roughly $10 a year at typical US electricity rates. That's background noise. The real issue is sleep disruption: bright light at night suppresses melatonin, and blue-white light makes it worse. If you need a nightlight, use a warm 2700K strip, keep it dim, and put it on a timer.
There is also the lifespan angle. LED strips have a rated life, and every hour overnight is one less hour at normal use. Running a strip 8 hours every night turns a 30,000-hour product into about 10 years. That's great—but you'll probably replace it for the color or driver long before then.
In my opinion, a motion-sensor strip under a bed or along a hallway is useful. Leaving it on all night isn't a budget problem; it's a sleep problem.
Why do DLC and UL listings matter in a price comparison?
When I compare Satco LED bulbs and fixtures against private-label bids, I look for two things: DLC listing and UL listing. DLC means the product is on the DesignLights Consortium qualified products list, which is what many utilities use for rebates. UL means an independent testing laboratory evaluated it for safety.
