Satco 33W PAR38 3000K High Lumen: Is It Really That Bright?

I get this one a lot, usually from someone trying to swap out an old 150W halogen floodlight. They see '33W' and think 'okay, similar to a standard PAR38.' Then they put the Satco 33W PAR38 3000K high lumen LED up in their parking lot and suddenly it's like a landing strip.

The short answer: Yes. It's that bright. I tripped over this one myself in late 2022.

From the outside, it looks like you can just match wattage. The reality is that the 'high lumen' part is doing all the work. This specific bulb (the Satco Sxxxx for the 3000K version) cranks out well over 2,500 lumens. That's closer to a 200W halogen equivalent. If you're putting it in a soffit that's maybe 10 feet high, you’re going to get glare—not illumination.

Wiring a Satco Motion Sensor: Why Won't It Stop Blinking?

This is by far the most common support question I get. A facility manager installs a Satco sensor motion wall switch or a flood light with an integrated sensor (like the popular S3184 model). It works, but it blinks. Or it turns on during the day. Or it won't turn off.

Nine times out of ten, it's not a defective sensor. It's cross-loading.

Here's the thing about Satco's motion sensors (especially the ones with dimming, like the Zigbee models): They need a neutral wire and a decent load. If you wire up a sensor to a single 5-watt LED bulb, there isn't enough inrush current to hold the relay closed. The sensor 'sees' the low load, thinks the bulb is burned out, and resets. Result? The light blinks on and off, or the sensor 'chatters.'

I had this exact issue in a March 2021 installation at a school hallway. We installed 8 sensors, each controlling a single 7-watt LED exit sign. Every single one blinked. We spent an afternoon troubleshooting before I realized the sensor required a minimum load of 40 watts. We swapped the 7-watt bulbs for standard 26-watt CFLs (which was the only option back then), and it worked perfectly.

Today, the fix is easier: Use the Satco sensor with a dummy load resistor (sold separately, about $15). Or, better yet, wire the sensor to control at least two fixtures to get the load up.

The 'One More Thing' you didn't ask: Satco's outdoor motion sensors also default to 'Test Mode' for the first 60 seconds. Are Satco Exposed Downlights Good for Steamy Bathrooms?

I love how exposed downlights look. That industrial, brutalist vibe with a clean light source. But people see the open back and ask: 'Can I put this over my shower?'

The honest answer is: Probably not, unless you're buying the right IP rating.

Most Satco exposed downlights (like the standard non-gasketed models) are rated for IC (Insulation Contact) and Damp Locations. That means they can handle some humidity from a sink or a toilet, but not the direct steam of a shower. Check the box. If it says 'UL Listed for Wet Locations,' you're fine. If it only says 'Damp Location,' you're risking moisture getting into the lamp holder. That's $50 in parts down the drain (pun intended).

Can I Cut Govee LED Strip Lights? (And Why You Might Be Asking)

This final question isn't directly about Satco. But it gets asked constantly on forums and in my inbox because someone is trying to finish a cove lighting project and they have leftover Govee strips. They want to cut them to size, but they don't know how, and they're wondering if they can just hack them.

So here's the straight answer for Govee: Yes, but only at the designated cut points.

Most Govee RGBIC and RGBWW strips have cut marks every 1-2 inches (marked by a little scissor icon). If you cut there, you can re-solder a connector. If you cut anywhere else, you will sever the copper trace, and that section will dead. I've personally salvaged exactly zero strips from a bad cut.

Looking back, I should have bought a Satco branded strip light instead of mixing brands on a project last year. The Govee was cheaper per foot, but the connector I had to buy to make it work with my Satco Zigbee controller cost me $18 (plus a week of waiting).
