What a cylinder hides is the driver. Where To Attach the Ground Wire On a Light Fixture

If you're doing the work yourself, please get the relevant part of the NEC and have someone qualified review it. What I can give you is what our licensed electrician taught me after years of watching him fix other people's “quick” jobs.

In a standard junction box, you'll have the hot, the neutral, and a ground — bare copper or green insulated. The fixture will have either a green wire, a green screw on its mounting bracket, or both. Everything has to connect together into one continuous grounding path back to the panel. No shortcuts.

  1. Turn off the power at the breaker. I know it's obvious. Say it anyway.
  2. Connect the fixture's green wire to the junction box ground wire (bare copper or green). A green wire nut works best, but any properly sized wire nut will do.
  3. If the fixture doesn't have a green wire, the mounting bracket will have a green screw. The junction box ground wire wraps around that screw, clockwise, and gets tightened down. That screw is your grounding point.
  4. If the fixture has both a green wire and a bracket with a green screw — common on metal fixtures — use a pigtail. Join the box ground, the fixture ground, and a short jumper to the bracket screw all together. That way, when someone removes the fixture later, the bracket stays grounded.
“The luminaire has to connect to the equipment grounding conductor,” our electrician likes to say, pointing at the relevant part of the NEC. “Not 'nice to have.' Required. Every time.”

The failure mode I keep seeing

Someone wraps the ground wire around a mounting screw that threads into a plastic junction box and calls it done. The screw touches plastic. It looks connected and isn't. The fixture works, so nobody notices, until a fault happens and there's no path for the electricity to go except through something you don't want it to.

Also, if your building is older and the grounding path is through metal conduit rather than a wire, that's not something I'm qualified to walk you through. That gets into electrical-code territory, and you should get a local licensed electrician to confirm what you're working with before you touch it.

When I Wouldn't Choose SATCO

For balance: SATCO isn't the answer to every lighting question.
