The first question I ask on any lighting project
Six years ago, I took over procurement for a 40-person electrical contractor. Our lighting budget hovered around $30,000 a year, and I've now tracked roughly $180,000 in cumulative orders in our cost system. That experience has turned me into someone who reads every line item before I recommend a product. It's also made me suspicious of any comparison that starts with the sticker price.
In this article, I want to walk through two comparisons I see constantly in commercial lighting decisions. The first is a real product comparison: a satco corn cob LED or satco LED bulbs versus a satco DOB downlight when you're deciding whether to retrofit or replace. The second is a category comparison that trips people up because it sounds similar: grow light vs uv light.
Those two may feel unrelated. They aren't. Both come down to matching the fixture to the environment and then calculating the total cost from that spec.
The retrofit path: satco corn cob LED and satco LED bulbs
Retrofit means you keep the existing housing. That's the big cost advantage at the moment of purchase. Instead of buying a new fixture, you change the light source and let the old housing do its job.
A satco corn cob LED is a cylindrical lamp with a row of LED chips that wrap around the core. It's named for its resemblance to a corn cob, and it's a workhorse for fixtures with a screw-based HID socket. We've used them in wall packs, canopy lights, and high-bay fixtures where the reflector and housing are still in good condition. They give fairly even, omnidirectional light, which matters in fixtures designed to spread output across a wide area.
A satco LED bulb is the easier retrofit family: A-shape bulbs for household-style fixtures, BR-shape reflector lamps for recessed cans, PAR-shape accents for outdoor or display lighting. When the existing fixture is a standard recessed can, a BR-style satco LED bulb is often the fastest way to bring that can back to life. No driver surgery, no rewiring, just the same base and a new lamp.
Here's the thing: I like both options. I've specified them many times. But I've learned that retrofit isn't a product decision. It's a housing decision.
The replacement path: satco DOB downlight
When the housing itself is the problem, you replace it. That's where a satco DOB downlight — a downlight with an integrated driver-on-board design — comes in. The fixture and the driver are matched, the thermal path is tested, and the whole assembly can be designed to sit in construction with insulation around it.
The downside is obvious: more material cost, more labor, and in some cases drywall repair. But 'more expensive' on the purchase order is not the same as 'more expensive' in a five-year operating budget.
Dimension 1: Total cost of ownership
When I audited our 2023 purchases, I saw 31 fixtures where we'd chosen retrofits with corn cob LEDs. The material cost was a fraction of replacing the entire fixture. That's the honest win for the retrofit path. But in that same audit, I found eight downlight projects where the retrofit quote was misleading once I added labor and missing pieces.
Here's an example from Q2 2024. I compared a quote for a satco corn cob LED with a quote for an unbranded equivalent. The satco lamp was priced at $21.10. The unbranded one was $15.40. I almost put the cheaper one on the order until I listed every line item. The unbranded product needed a $3.85 adapter, a $4.00 shipping charge, and the warranty was one year instead of five. Total for the unbranded lamp: $23.25. The satco lamp was $21.10 and included the base. The 'cheap' quote was $2.15 higher, and it didn't include the extra field labor.
That's a small gap. The same hidden line items show up in larger retrofits. Ballast-bypass kits, socket adapters, freight, and troubleshooting time add up fast. When you compare a satco LED bulb to a replacement DOB downlight, ask the same question: does the lower quote include everything the old housing needs to run safely?
I don't have hard data on how often lighting rebuyers miss those costs. What I can say anecdotally is that in six years I've never had a project fail because the total installed cost was too high. I've had plenty that failed because the team approved materials without calculating the total.
Dimension 2: Downlight insulation is the real spec
For recessed fixtures, the spec that gets ignored is insulation. An old recessed can that is not IC-rated cannot have insulation pressed against it. The label says IC or non-IC. If it says non-IC, you're supposed to maintain clearance between the fixture and insulation. That clearance is often gone by the time someone added blown-in insulation years later.
I've seen what happens. The heat has nowhere to go, the LED retrofit bulb runs hot, and a driver inside the bulb starts failing early. Or worse, the housing's thermal protection cycles the light off, and a facility manager thinks the bulb is defective. The housing is the actual problem.
That's why downlight insulation isn't a detail you can skip in a comparison. A $5 satco LED bulb is a great value in an IC-rated can. In a non-IC can covered with insulation, the right fix may be removing the old housing and installing a new DOB downlight rated for insulation contact.
In 2024, we replaced 14 non-IC downlights in an insulated office ceiling. The quote included removing the old cans, patching the ceiling, and installing new satco DOB downlights. It doubled the project cost compared with the retrofit bulb plan. But the retrofit plan would have told the client to keep hot fixtures away from their roof insulation. Not ideal, and not workable. The replacement cost more; the failed retrofit would have cost more in call-backs.
When I read a fixture spec sheet, the first thing I look for is the IC classification. That tells me more about true cost than the lumens-per-watt number. If the spec sheet doesn't state IC or non-IC, that's a red flag.
Dimension 3: Grow light vs UV light
Now the comparison that sounds like a trick question: grow light vs uv light. I've seen procurement requests use the two phrases as if they were interchangeable. They aren't.
A grow light is designed to provide photosynthetically active radiation — light plants can use to drive photosynthesis. A UV light is designed for different jobs: UV-C for disinfection, UV-A and UV-B for curing and other controlled processes. If you hang a UV fixture over plants expecting grow light results, you can damage them. If you buy a grow light for sanitation, you're wasting money.
In that sense, grow light vs uv light is the same kind of false choice as comparing a satco corn cob LED to a satco DOB downlight by price alone. The first question is always application.
A satco corn cob LED is a general illumination source. A satco LED bulb can handle many general-purpose jobs. But if the task is horticulture or UV processing, neither is in that category. Compare grow lights with grow lights; compare UV fixtures with UV fixtures.
What I do now
After years of comparing quotes and documenting outcomes, I've narrowed the decision to a checklist:
- Choose the retrofit path — satco LED bulbs or satco corn cob LED — when the existing housing is intact, the recessed can is IC-rated or has proper clearance from insulation, and the socket and wiring are accessible.
- Choose a satco DOB downlight when the old housing is non-IC, the ceiling is insulated, or the existing fixture burns too hot for a safe retrofit. You're paying for the entire fixture's thermal engineering, not just the lamp.
- For grow light vs uv light, don't use either general lighting product as a stand-in. Identify the required spectrum first, then compare options within that category.
The cheapest quote is only the first step. The lower total cost is the step that pays the next invoice.
One final cost-controller habit: I write the project type on the spreadsheet before I enter prices. Retrofit or replace. General illumination or specialty. That simple line has saved me more money than any discount code I've ever negotiated.
